So… my daughter has a very cute habit of drawing pictures and leaving them on my desk for when I get home. Very cute… until lately… when I started to see all of the medical disorders these renditions of Daddy had embedded in them.

Like this one (above)… It’s cute… it’s funny… until you see that (a) I’m obese, (b) I have a DVT, (c) I have a right facial droop, (d) probable sleep apnea, and (e) a frozen shoulder. Oh… and I probably have gas.

Yeesh… kids these days. I blame the internet.

Science humor and infectious disease jokes… for some of these you’ll just groan. For others, if you laugh at them, you are never permitted to refer to anyone else as a “geek” or a “nerd” again. Let’s say you bring in some candy to the office… I open up the nice, beautiful tin you brought it in, only to find this (see the picture below). So, I offer some to a friend… “Ed, would you like a melena ball?”

To your credit, though… they smell just fine… uh… certainly as fine as a melena ball could smell.

Funny video on social media… I like this one, because of all of the social media that I’m involved in, I see the least utility in LinkedIn. Since so many people in healthcare are on LinkedIn, I thought I’d share this with you…

The appropriate use of medical humor could (and should) have an important role in medical education and public awareness. And although I do think everyone’s going a little overboard with their worries about H1N1, I applaud the effort of the United States Department of Health and Human Services in soliciting the public’s help in alerting the public on the importance of washing hands. The 2009 Flu Prevention PSA Contest had over 200 entries this month – some funny, some serious.

On September 22nd at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the winner of the H1N1 Public Service Announcement Contest. Congratulations to Dr. Clarke of Baldwin, New York for his winning video H1N1 Rap. You can see his video here:
