I sincerely believe that we can make education fun for patients and for medical professionals to improve learning and compliance. Nursing competencies, docs adhering to hospital policies, students retaining medical knowledge, and patients taking their meds… Let’s make all of that stuff fun. The appropriate use of medical humor could (and should) have an important role in medical education and public awareness. And although I do think everyone’s going a little overboard with their worries about H1N1, I applaud the effort of the United States Department of Health and Human Services in soliciting the public’s help in alerting the public on the importance of washing hands. The 2009 Flu Prevention PSA Contest had over 200 entries this month – some funny, some serious.

On September 22nd at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the winner of the H1N1 Public Service Announcement Contest. Congratulations to Dr. Clarke of Baldwin, New York for his winning video H1N1 Rap. You can see his video here:

Dr. Clarke… if you’re reading this… First, great job on the video… Second, some advice… if you make a video for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, then be sure to lose the hand gestures.

Hilarious video… the only thing missing is a catchy trade name.  With a short, simple & catchy trade name Big Pharma make it easy for us (and patients) to remember the trade name, but never the generic (Paracetamoxyfrusebendroneomycin).

I like the fact that Paracetamoxyfrusebendroneomycin can be taken in multiple routes.  I’ve always wondered about some sort of mega-suppository… we could call it the “Protocol Pellet”.  Every discipline and hospital service line could have its own per-rectal bolus of meds – psych, ortho, open heart, CHF, etc.

I just posted a new Chart Farts® video on YouTube…

It has all of the usual (hilarious) samples from the Chart Farts® collection… but this one has a twist at the end that will cause a small subset of you will wet yourself when you see it. The rest of you will just wonder… WTF? (hint: you have to be older than 30 to get it… or have some weird fascination with watching re-runs of old, 1980s sitcoms)

In any case, the Joint Commission won’t like it…

But hey, I laugh at doctor jokes… nurses laugh at nurse jokes…
