Medical humor can sometimes tick people off, even if it rings true. Take this funny pay for performance commentary on the state of nephrology, for example…

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. And you know what? Let’s look at that name a little closer… “Colon Cancer Awareness Month”. It’s not very catchy. In fact, it’s a little frightening.
Don’t we want people to actually show up for their colonoscopy screening? Don’t we want them to actually take their colonoscopy prep as directed? (their “Go-Profusely”) Well, let’s rename the month. Check out this colonoscopy comic… much more memorable, but perhaps only slightly less scary – It’s time for the Annual Running of the Bowels. (Please spare us your middle school tendencies… No Poop-lona, Spain jokes, please)

Check out this funny video from ZDoggMD where he analyzes some medical news.
I love Star Wars and I love medical humor. This is a nice combo.
“I sense much stool in you” was hilarious. But while we’re on Star Wars and stool, let me share with you some disturbing news…
I was reviewing the stats on how people end up at GiggleMed.com and I noticed a search term slowly creeping up the ranks… Google “Admiral Ackbar stool” and sho’ nuff you end up at a GiggleMed blog post. What does that say about you if you Google “Admiral Ackbar stool”? (not that there’s anything wrong with that)
But I digress… go to ZDoggMD’s blog to see more medical humor.
Here’s an ultra-short (about 18 seconds) medical humor video where we explore what it would be like if the Quinton catheter were a Clinton catheter instead. Sounds silly, but you might like what he has to say.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water…
I thought this was a pretty good recovery on the part of the news program… just go with it… you make a blooper, laugh about it. (Obviously you wouldn’t if anyone were hurt, but there were no damages from this earthquake… fortunately).
Funny video on social media… I like this one, because of all of the social media that I’m involved in, I see the least utility in LinkedIn. Since so many people in healthcare are on LinkedIn, I thought I’d share this with you…
Medical humor, jokes, chart farts, hospital bloopers, funny Facebook videos, and a boatload of funnies are yours on Facebook… just friend GiggleMed.
I’ve started to use Facebook a little more lately because it is easier to post longer jokes and funny stories there than on Twitter – and shorter stories and jokes than here, on this blog. Most of the time, I’ll put stuff on both, but sometimes the best medical humor spews forth when I’m commenting on someone else’s wall or Facebook post.
The appropriate use of medical humor could (and should) have an important role in medical education and public awareness. And although I do think everyone’s going a little overboard with their worries about H1N1, I applaud the effort of the United States Department of Health and Human Services in soliciting the public’s help in alerting the public on the importance of washing hands. The 2009 Flu Prevention PSA Contest had over 200 entries this month – some funny, some serious.
On September 22nd at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the winner of the H1N1 Public Service Announcement Contest. Congratulations to Dr. Clarke of Baldwin, New York for his winning video H1N1 Rap. You can see his video here:
Dr. Clarke… if you’re reading this… First, great job on the video… Second, some advice… if you make a video for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, then be sure to lose the hand gestures.
The top ten videos from the contest can be found at Flu.gov.
Also, check out Dr. John Clarke’s Health Hop® Music for some pretty awesome CDs for your patients and their families.
You will be as happy as a pig in mud to know up front what this post is NOT going to be… It will not have jokes about BMI or obesity. There will be no mention of police officers… no talk of bringing home the bacon. Even if swine flew, I would have nothing to say about government spending or the fat cats on Wall Street. You can wait until the mad cows come home and there will be no mention of mast cells with heparin… and certainly no talk of an Aporkalypse.
So, here’s my public service announcement: Don’t panic… although the pig is out of the bag, so to speak, have you ever stopped to wonder what would happen if we did a news media play-by-play of the spread of any normal flu season? I bet it would be pretty scary. A play-by-play in sports is exciting… in infectious disease news it’s frightening.
Anyway, I really hesitated to post this swine flu comic in case it does become worse than most of us in healthcare think it will be. The pig had my tongue, but here it goes. I’ve chosen to balance this comic with some serious resources. See the links below the comic. And for crying out loud… Wash your hooves.
You can get some hilarious medical chart bloopers (Chart Farts (R)) sent to your inbox every 2 weeks or so. They can really brighten your day (or forward to others & brighten theirs). Real stuff... from real charts.
